Are French Bulldogs good first time pets?
Amber asked:
I would like to get a Frenchie puppy, but I am unsure of the ups and downs of having a French Bulldog, I am aware of health issues (breathing, eye problems, digestive problems and ofcourse their gassiness), and physical limitations with the breed. This question focuses more on the temperament and any other information you could only find out by actually owning a Frenchie.
I grew up with labs, they are smart, cute, and eager to please, but I do not like larger dogs. we HAVE a Basset hound but he isn’t MY dog. I get the stubborn thing. I guess I should have clarified “first time pet” a little better.

No. Frenchies aren’t always the best kind for a first time owner. (Stubbornness) Do something more of a Labrador or something that fits your lifestyle.
They’re very stubborn dogs, so not good if you have a passive or meek personality.
Training them obviously requires a firm hand, strict boundaries and consistency.
try this site its great for first time owners. but ya bullie breeds sometimes aren’t the best for first time pet owners they can be hard to train but try this site who knows what you can find!

TRUST ME
THEY ARE THE BEST
They are OKAY with the first time primary caretaker.
I mean they need boundaries and rules from day 1. They can be stubborn and difficult to train but very sweet dogs and this shouldn’t be your first flat faced breed- you need experience in flatfacers before going to a breed with as many possible health issues as a Frenchie.
I disagree with Frenchies being hard to train. I breed them and actually start their training from the time there eyes open. They are house trained as well as knowing “sit” and “Dance” by 8 weeks. These are amazing dogs if you are willing to invest your time. They are smart and live to please. They can be a bit stubborn, however If you are patient and firm you will win. Be very selective when choosing a breeder to insure you get a puppy that has been started with training early on. They develop a set of ideals very quickly.
