I’m Getting A French Bulldog in 2 days. What Do I Need To Get Started?

MissAmb asked:

I have been looking for months to find a good breeder for my “dream dog” a frenchie :) I finally found one and he will be here in a few days. I was just curious to what all i need to get started with this breed. I have never owned a dog before and am kinda nervous. Do I need to buy nail clippers right away? Is there certain toys that are better for puppy’s? (he is 10 weeks old) Do I start potty training right away or dont worry about it for a few days till he gets used to his new home?
I just want to be a good owner to this puppy so any advice will be nice!!!! Thank you

That tool kit looks great. I was just going to suggest some sort of book.

DON’T clip your dogs nails on your own.

Does he have all his shots? Find a vet right away and set your first appointment for just a general check up, a-okay. They’ll also be able to answer any additional questions you have.

ok for new puppy in your life you will need to get the following.

puppy pads so he or she will not pee on your floors or carpets. can find these at petsmart or petco

visit to the vet for all of the shots needed before you can take him or her for walks in the neighborhood or parks.

alot of patients and a loving heart.
chew toys, leash, color with the pets name ,avid chip from your vet in case the puppy gets away you can have he or she found and delivered safely home.

hopefully you have a GREAT breeder and….
PLENTY of disposable money for the Vet
an AWESOME Vet
lots of time to devote to the Frenchie……….they need alot of attention and can have health issues….mainly shin and joint issues. That is why I say a GREAT, reputable Breeder….so the animal’s health is guaranteed by the Breeder.

Frenchie’s are TOO cute….I am very happy for you…these are what my Mum has….she loves them to death!!!

a crate
a leash–not the retractable one
bowl
food–ask the breeder what the pup has been eating
chew toys–very small
stuffed animal toys–with squeeker inside
shampoo
carpet cleaner
puppy treats–pupperoni is really good for house training

as for house training….the best thing to do is after a few days of getting used to each other, start taking the puppy out as often as possible-every hour or so. you’ll start getting used to his behavior (circling, sniffing, etc.) when he’s trying to find a spot. when the puppy goes outside, use positive reinforcement immediatly-bring the treats outside to reward him as soon as he’s finished. my vet told us to use hot dogs as a reward while they’re very small. potty training is very hard and frustrating at first, but if you put in the work, the pup will be trained soon–we got ours trained after a month!
Make sure you have a good vet and stay up to date on all shots. it may also be a good idea to look into pet insurance after the first check up, it can save you a bundle.
good luck!

Know where you will keep the dog when you are not with him. Make sure you make it a comfortable space. All of my dogs as young pups really liked to play with soft toys that would squeek.

I would start house training him right away. The way I did it, was at 2 months they needed to go out every two hours, 3 months every three hours, etc. It will be tiring, but well worth it!

I would also purchase tags w/ your address, collar, leash (you won’t use this often at first, but you’ll need it soon), make a vet appointment for a regular check up (and get shots if he doesn’t already have them), food and water bowls, and a kennel/crate that fits in your vehicle.

Good luck!

To start you will need the following:
Crate/Bed
Treats for housebreaking etc.
Squeaky toys
Nylabone or similar for chewing
Collar/Leash
Food (All Natural) Ex: Nutro Natural, Wysong, Solid Gold
Shampoo/Conditioner
Above all a well puppy vet visit
To start out you can use human nail clippers to keep their nails neatly trimmed. I use those on all my puppies, because their nails are so small.
You must start potty training right away, now is a very vital point in your puppies life, he/she must learn their boundaries now or they will not learn them at all. Crate training is the best form of potty training, you can find information on crate training here online, don’t go buy a book, it’s a waste of money and you can find everything you need to know right here on the internet. Do not allow them to chew on anything but their provided toys & bones. If you see them chew on anything else immediately say no, take the item away and replace it with something that belongs to the puppy and pet them or give them a treat. You must have patience when training a new puppy, don’t beat the puppy or yell at the puppy, this will make your puppy shy and unsociaciable. Your puppy must be supervised at all times, if your puppy is left unsupervised and messes in the floor, remember its your fault. Do not give the puppy free run of your home until it is completely potty trained, it usually takes about 2 months to completely potty train a puppy. Good Luck!!
