Im interested in purchasing a French Bulldog?

mitch s asked:

I’ve been thinking of it for a while now and I finally found a site that I can afford one. I have a couple of concerns thought.

First off they are UABR registered, im kind of new to dogs but I have usually found that most dogs are AKC. Would this make a difference? Im getting the puppy as strictly a pet, no breeding or shows or anything.

Secondly im worried about the site. Bristle Ridge Kennel or www.brkennel.com

could anyone help me out here? I just want to make sure that its an actual kennel and not a scam.

Frankly, just the fact that they have so many different breeds makes them very questionable.

If you are on a tight budget and cannot shell out the $800+ for a well bred pup, why not try a rescue organization? They have a minimal adoption fee that includes all shots and vetting- usually with spay/neuter as well unless the pup is too young, in which case you will be given a certificate for a discounted/free spay/neuter.

EDIT: Bichonpoo? Schnoodle? Wow. Look at the birthdates. They are pumping out a litter every week or so! Do NOT buy from these guys! Kudos on checking things out before investing!

Bristle Ridge is a glorified puppy mill. They sell more breeds than most people see in a lifetime. I do not even know what UABR registry is, but I’d run form this one. SCARY.

It’s a puppymill.

Don’t even think of buying a puppy from there.

There’s a reason the puppy is “affordable”. You only get what you pay for, and a “cheap” French Bulldog is liable to be plagued with health problems which will cost you more in the long run.

Wait until you can *really* afford one (and their care), and then buy from a reputable breeder that is a member of the French Bulldog Club of America

This is a puppy mill. Look at the different breeds they have available.

UABR is United All Breed Registry.. its a scam puppy mill registry, not a legit one.

You wont get a breeding or show quality pup from them anyways.. just a pet-quality that may likely have health problems. If cost is a concern, I wouldnt buy here.. you may get a “cheap” pup, but it will cost you plenty in vet bills later.

You’d be better off to save some money and buy from a reputable breeder who does genetic health testing.. sometimes good breeders actually sell pet quality puppies for LESS than what millers charge!

Get a referral from the breed club..

There is always a debate between the validity of UABR compared to AKC. Most folks are leery abou the UABR because there is no background check required. Also, since this breeder has lots of different breeds, it is unlikely that they are a responsible breeder.

If you have ANY way to go visit this facility first, that would really be THE best way to see if they are a good breeder or not.

Otherwise – google search ‘french bulldog rescue’ and poke around there. You can find frenchies that are in need of a home – and even though they may have originated from a puppy mill, they will be less expensive for you at this point, and you can give a good home to a little one that really needs it!

AKC is more common, at least in the USA, but it only matters if you intend to breed. Otherwise it’s useless, so don’t be concerned about his papers. I would not get one from the internet from an unproven site. It could be a puppy mill. If that site has more affordable dogs than your local newspaper it may very well be a puppy mill. If you don’t know what that means, Google it. It’s a very long explanation to give you the true meaning of these cruel breeders. Go to the local paper, or French Bulldog adoption agencies (you can Google them too). Call local groomers for recommendations. Put a note on some vet’s bulletin board. The dog you choose will be with you until it’s last breath, please choose wisely. This is what I think of your original idea, “When in doubt, throw it out” Good luck and be careful

I agree with everyone else on here. The site screams puppy mill! You want to find a breeder that only breeds the one breed, shows their dogs, has screened for health conerns, etc.

Unfortunately, you have choosen a very expensive breed. French Bulldogs require a lot of prenatal care, almost always have to have a C-section for a safe birth, and generally have very small litters of 1 or 2. All this adds up to one expensive puppy. You can find “cheaper” ones like the ones on that website, but they will probably cost you 3Xs more in vet bills than the cost of one quality puppy.

My advice would be to save up for a while until you can afford a quality puppy or check out a rescue organization like.

EDIT: You might even check out this link on the website. These puppies look like they will be up for adoption soon. That would be a great opportunity to rescue AND get a puppy.

The site looks legit. If they didn’t allow personal visits to the kennel itself than I’d be thinking it was a scam. Of course I’d only buy from a breeder that I could go to in person and would never put money down with-out seeing the “merchandise” (ie the puppy in question and the care of the parents). I’m also not a big fan of “transporting” little puppies via ground or air, which is why I would only use a local breeder.

It’s a puppy mill. Here’s how you can tell:
1. Lots of breeds available now.
2. It’s in Missouri, a hotbed of puppy mills.
3. USDA license – breeders only need this if they sell to pet stores. USDA licensing only requires that a dog’s primary enclosure be tall enough for it to stand and turn around- and the dogs are never required to be let out. They also require wire bottoms to the cages, which cut into the dogs feet.
4. They intentionally breed mixed breeds aka “designer dogs”.
5. Suspect registry that registers mixes.
6. No pictures of breeding dogs.
7. They ship puppies.

If cost is an issue, I suggest adopting a dog from a breed rescue or shelter. Puppy mill dogs are more likely than ones from reputable breeders to have health problems requiring costly vet care.

What is a Responsible & Reputable Dog Breeder?
These are people who breed to improve the breed because they love it.
Their notable traits:
-They show & compete their dogs.
-They win titles.
-They have researched animal husbandry & genetics.
-They have only a few breeding dogs.
-The females are at least 2 before having the first litter.
-The females are bred only a few times in their lives.
-The dogs live with the family.
-The dog’s eyes, knees and if necessary, hips are checked at the appropriate age and they are also tested for any breed-specific health issues.
-They have waiting lists for the pups before they are conceived.
-They give potential puppy owners the 3rd degree.
-The require new puppy owners to sign a contract that if they can’t keep the puppy for any reason at any time in its life, it must be returned to the breeder.
-They have a spay/neuter clause in their contract.
-By the time the puppy goes home it has been to the vet more than once for vaccinations and check ups.

What is a Back Yard Breeder?
This is anyone who intentionally or unintentionally allows dogs to breed who are not the best representatives of the breed.
Their notable traits:
-They may only have one dog, or they may have several.
-They want to make some extra money.
-They sell through the newspaper.
-They may keep their dogs inside as pets and may love them, but they are not educated about animal husbandry or genetics.
-They do no health testing.
-The pups may go to the vet once to get vacs, or may not go at all.
-Their dogs may or may not be registered, but they don’t show or compete.
-They will likely let the puppy go to anyone with the cash.
-They don’t care if the puppy gets spayed or neutered or what happens if its new owners can’t keep it.
-They may be breeding intentional mixes, aka designer dogs.

What is a puppy mill?
A puppy mill is a large commercial operation that treats dogs like livestock or factory machinery.
Their notable traits:
-There may be hundred of dogs.
-They are kept in tiny, wire bottom cages, sometimes stacked.
-The breeding dogs never see a vet or groomer. The puppies may see a “vet” employed by the pet store before being put on the sales floor.
-They see dogs as commodities, not living things with feelings.
-They sell through pet stores, brokers, the internet, or flea markets.
-They do no health testing.
-Puppies are registered in batches, if they are registered at all.
-They may be breeding intentional mixes, aka designer dogs.
-They breed the females every heat, and when they are too weak to keep breeding, they may turn them over to rescuers, or they may just kill them.
-They provide only the minimum heat, cooling, shelter, and cleanliness required by the USDA, which is minimal.

You should be very worried about this site. There are 23 different breeds of puppies that these people are selling. All the pups are raised in pens. Please don’t buy one from them!! I am sure it’s an actual kennel, but the fact that the dogs aren’t AKC registered means that likely they can’t prove pure bloodlines. Not only that, it is clearly a puppy mill. Please! Go to a reputable breeder. It might cost you more in the beginning, but you will save loads on vet bills and behavior training! NOt to mention, I don’ t see where any health testing of the parents has been done…

PS- We’re thinking of getting a Fenchie in two years! I love them!

Check the breeders recommended by the parent club- they have to follow a strict code of ethics. The link is below.

I think its an actual kennel. If it was fake the pictures would probably look really cheesy.
