Is it ok to leave a puppy home alone?
Stephy w asked:
I want to get a french bulldog puppy, but i’m afraid to leave it home alone while i’m at work.I can come home on my lunch break and take care of it. Then go back to work and take care of it when i get out. But i don’t have anyone to watch it while i’m gone. Is it ok for it to be alone for long periods of time?? I need help!

As long as the puppy is in a crate or a room of its own you can. Just make sure it has plenty of food and water.
How old is the puppy you are planning on getting?
They should be fine, but you should understand that dogs are tough to take care of, and you should be prepared for several things when owning one.
yes it is okay to leave your puppy at home but if you really dont trust it then either put it outside or you can get a pet babysitter. it sounds wierd but it works. sometime puppies chew up things so it up to you i hope this helps
because puppys have small blatters they need to be taked out often to relieve them selves. if you still get a puppy make sure you cage train it so it will not reck your house.
if you have a fenced yard it is nice, and he can run. just make sure he has shelter and water too. if he is inside, make sure he does not chew. my dog stays home too. most do fine.
Get a puppy crate that’s big enough for a cushy bed and some toys and he’ll be fine in it during the day. It also helps in the house training, because most animals won’t “go” where they sleep or eat. Just make sure you take him out AS SOON AS you get home, so he knows it’s not some form of punishment, and so he can be taken out for his potty time.
Yes you can leave it alone but it needs to be in an area it can’t escape from ( or do too much damage in !).
Leave it plenty of water and toys to play with and an area of paper or a dirtbox for it to ‘go’ in.
It will cry at first and it may scratch doors etc so choose where you leave it carefully.
Make sure you take it for a good walk every night after work – he will need the exercise and fresh air.
It would be good to come home at lunch time to play with it for 30 min for the first week ( maybe 2 weeks ) slowly moving it out to every couple of days to help him settle in to being alone.
Of course it will be OK alone. You just need to get a crate with enough room for it and her bed and a few chew toys. If the pup will be alone for less than 4 hours, you don’t need to leave a water dish. But any longer than that and you should invest in a good water dish that cannot be spilled or tipped over. Oh, don’t forget the puddle pads.
8 hours of no one letting him/her go out for potty break, they will be crossin their legs. otherwise your fine, esp. with a lunch break. Just leave news paper out if you don’t want to clean any messy accidents. accidents always happen until they get used to their home.
Yes as long as you think the puppy will be ok then
I think it will be fine.
No … you should not get a dog until you can spend a lot of time with it. Dogs are pack animals and need companionship.
See if there is a rescue group in your area and be a volunteer. That way, you can spend time with the dogs and learn more about them at the same time. You will also be helping them in the best way possible.
If you still want to have a “Frenchie”, get an older one that would not need to be potty trained or exercised as much, since you don’t seem to have a lot of time to spare.
Amusing you have looked into the breed, it would say if it ok with being left alone. What I suggest is taking a week off when you first get the puppy and search day leave the house for a period of time eventually working up to the time between leaving your home in the morning and returning on your lunch break. This is what I did with my dog, who is a Yorkshire Terrier and it worked fine. I dont suggest giving him/her run of the place until they are older, I would block a section off until you feel he is ready, potty trained, and comprehending that you will come home ( that way he wont eat/distroy things)
I had the same question before I got my puppy. When you first get a puppy you need to be off with it for about a week, so it can get used to you. After that you can leave it alone for 4-6 hours AT MOST. If left alone more than that it will start to be destructive. When the puppy matures into a dog you can leave it alone longer provided food and water.
well yes if you leave him outside or a room or anything but you need plenty of water and food and toys(chew) it will also be great if you have another dog to be outside with him only if they dont fight because my friend got a nother dog bigger then their 1st dog and he almost chewd his neck off but its great that he didnt oo and lock your gate if they will be outside and inside or else someone might steal them oo and if you dogs potty trained you could make a doggie dore for =wenever they want 2 get out well i hope it turns out right please tel me if its good(my advise)
In my opinion, a puppy shouldn’t be left alone for more than 4 or 5 hrs a day but that’s not gospel, just opinion. I’d get him a nice crate with the door closed and put a Kong in there and some toys that he can hang with. I’d leave a tv on for company and a light if the room tends to be dark. You can also just baby gate a kitchen area with no cords hanging or nothing to get in trouble with and leave the crate door open if you do it this way. I wouldn’t put food or water in a closed crate cause the pup will need to go cause pups have small bladders and have to **** frequently. But if you let the dog in the kitchen then you can leave some food and water cause if he goes then at least its on the floor and not in the crate. Do NOT under any circumstances let the puppy have the run of the house til it is out of the chewing stage and is very very house trained (at least 10 mos). They still chew after a year sometimes.
Maybe you can look into a doggie day care in your area. Dogs really do need companionship. You have to pay attention to the pup all the time that you are home, taking it for walks and getting it exercise and playing and bonding. I wouldn’t want to be home alone all day. Good luck.
The rule of thumb for how long you can crate a dog is the number of months of age plus 1 (up to 8 hours). Therefore, a 5 month old puppy could be alone for 6 hours. I wouldn’t leave food with him/her if you are coming home at lunch. He/she will get filled up and have no choice but to soil in his/her crate. Be sure to take him/her out before you put the puppy back in the crate for the afternoon. Another idea is to put the puppy in a puppy-proof small room while you are gone. You might want to try this when the puppy is older.
A few years back my family got a puppy, and when we could not take it with us, we did leave it home for long periods of time. It would be great if you can come home during lunch and take care of it. I would suggest getting a kennel for your puppy, that is what we did with ours, and it worked out great. We got a full size kennel, and just blocked off space so that there was enough room for the puppy to move around, but not too much room, because if you have too much room, he might go potty on one end of it and sleep in the other. We even put him in there during the night, the first night he did not like it, and neither did I, but he got used to it, and this helped with him holding it through the night, and because he did not want to go potty on his bed, he would bark and wake us up. A kennel also helps those puppy urges of chewing things around the house! I would not recommend keeping any toys in there as the puppy could tear it apart and maybe eat the toy. I would not leave food or water in there either as this will stimulate the bladder and could cause accidents while you are gone. I would maybe put a blanket down that he can make his own. I would recomend that you feed himr right after you let him out in the morning, and again right before you go to work, and do the same thing at lunch time. My dog got so used to his kennel being his special place, that he would go sleep in there during the middle of the day, and it is something you can take with you anywhere, and he will feel comfortable in it. I think a kennel is a perfect solution for someone who can’t be home all day with their puppy.
Yes if you lock the doors =]
Yes should be fine as long as it has water and some food not to much, I would refine it in the laundry area with newspapers on the floor. Heaps of toys or something to amuse it. A clock is good 2. Or if not inside do you have a cage of some sort and put it in there till you come home and spend some time with it and then when its time to go to bed. Have the same rountine that way it knows that its his own place. again with toys/water/food at least this way it has the frresh air and it can see things going on around.
Hope this helps.
i was wondering because im getting a king charles spaniel puppy for christmas would it be ok to leave it with food and water while i go work 8:10 – 3:30 please can you answer me back thank you it would really help thanks
@LUCYC: Leaving a puppy at home alone for 7 hours is not ok! Puppys should only be crated for 3-5hours. I’d come home at lunch every day to let the dog out. Also to help the dog get over you leaving make it’s crate a fun place. Hide toys( Maybe a puppy binkie with peanut butter) and treats in the cage.Start off by letting him stay in it for 5min then work your way up.Don’t cuddle the puppy the moment that you come back give it around 5min so that it sees that it’s ok for it to be alone. And you might want to feed your puppy on a set time. For most dogs it means that they dont over eat. Most puppies should eat twice a day. Once 7-9am and the next time 4-6pm.Always take your puppy out RIGHT after it eats. When your puppy goes to the bathroom it may get distracted so always take it to the same place. Hope i helped!
@Mikayla L:
Don’t put your puppy outside unless you want to kill your French Bulldog. They don’t regulate temperature very well and can get heat stroke.
