Claire B asked:

Hi everyone,
I am getting a French Bulldog puppy for Christmas, and I already know most of the cons, such as they’re many diseases that they are prone to. Can you guys please give me pros of this breed? Thanks everyone!!

French bulldogs are adorable! And I have always loved that snorty/wheezy sound that all bulldogs make when they get excited.

Every one I’ve met has been a sweetie …but…I won’t ever have one…..just not my preference.
Watch out for SEIZURES more than any other problem.

They’re wonderful companion dogs but they do require more maintenance than lots of other dogs…

You need to check their ****** folds, ears, eyes pretty regularly and clean them… ****** folds can stain, become crusty, or have yeast infections if not maintained properly.

They shed, and some more than others… They blow their coats two times a year, but you’ll probably need to sweep and vacuum dander just about every day (seriously!)

They snore… They snort… And they can scare you if you don’t know what a reverse sneeze is… They stand in place, heave, and look like they’re trying to couph up a big hair ball or something, and then they make this dreaded hacking noise and it’s all over… Very freaky.

They’re not dogs that typically bark much, but some are prone to whine and yodel occasionally…

They stick to you like glue… They like to be around you 24/7… They lean on you, lounge on you, pounce on you, walk over you, and demand attention.

Some people find them very, very challenging to house-break… And some fail at house-breaking completely… I find them highly trainable, but I’ve been living around them for the past 17 years so I never give them the opportunity to *** in my home from day one and that pretty much works for me.

It’s not so much that they’re prone to diseases, it’s just that they can potentially have spinal or osteo problems so you need to deal with breeders that have their dogs examined and certified by either the Orthopedic Foundation of America or PENN/HIP… OFA has on on-line database that you can check by the dog’s registered AKC or Kennel name…

Some dogs have longer elongated soft palates or pinched stenotic nares… If the dogs get too overheated and can’t breathe, you may need to have corrective surgery performed on the nares and the palate…

The pros of having any dog are companionship, love, fun, amusement, otherwise what’s the point? The question is what do you want out of a dog?

Good luck!
