What breed of dog would produce a whole litter of puppies that are BORN with no tail?
I have a litter of puppies that were turned in to the animal shelter that I’m bottle feeding. The mother is unknown. There are three of them and all of them have short tails that appear to have been docked. But they still have their umbilical stumps so my vet said that there’s no way they had their tails docked and have completely healed already.
The only breeds that I know of that have naturally short tails are Boston Terriers, French Bulldogs and the Stumpy-Tailed Cattle Dog.
One puppy with a short tail could be a fluke but all three is a breed standard.
Can you offer any help on different breeds of dogs that are consistently BORN with naturally “docked” tails?
Right now they look no different than any other puppy. They’re too young to have any distinguishing marks. One pup is seal colored with a white blaze on his face. Another is seal colored with only white toes. The last one is brown with a white blaze on it’s face.
So far they don’t appear to have shorter legs, smushed in faces, etc. I know this isn’t much information to go on but it’s all I have right now. Sorry.
Their tails are natural. I checked and there is definitely a taper there. Actually one of them seems almost kinked… Boston maybe??
For them to be mixed breeds and ALL have short tails, they’d have to have a double grandparent. Meaning they’d have to share either the same exact grandparent or have a grandparent/parent on both the mom and dad’s side that both have naturally short tails. Not impossible but not very likely either.
They could be mixed breeds and that’s fine with me. I just need as much info as I can get so I can tell their future “parents” what size dog they’re going to be. And to give them as much info about the breed characteristics (lots of exercise, minimal grooming, etc) as possible.
The naturally short tail should help narrow the field.

I believe Pembroke Welsh Corgis are born with no tails, but I may be mistaken.
could help if you described how they looked

What do these puppies look like? Aussies don’t have tails but I can’t see anyone turning them in to a shelter!
Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s are born with docked tails. They are small-sized dogs. A picture would help.
Aussies and Corgis could both have naturally bobbed tails. It’s not consistent though…Both breeds can be Naturally Bobbed OR Docked if not born with Bobbed tails.
There is a limited list of breeds of dog which are born naturally with very short tails. These breeds are said to contain the “bob-tail” gene. It should be noted that just because a breed contains the gene, not all members of that breed will exhibit it, ie; some of those dogs may still be born with a normal length tail and these puppies will be docked.
The CFA is aware of the following breeds that carry this gene: French Bulldogs, Boston Terriers, Corgies, Polish Lowlands, English Bull Dog and Australian Shepherds.
How can you tell a “bob-tail” dog from a docked dog?
The back bone (spine) comprises of small bones called vertebrae. At the end of a natural tail they taper off and the last vertebrae is markedly smaller than the vertebrae at the top of the tail. A docked tail terminates abruptly with no tapering.
Consider that these pups are probably not purebred, and may have quite a mix in them as well as a parent or grandparent who has the natural docked tail.
Boston Terriers are frequently born with no tails. In fact, if they are show dogs, this is considered to be a great quality in a BT (along with ears that stand up & don’t droop.)
