What have to I do if my puppy have allergy reaction to the Bordetella vaccine as reverse sneezing?

Natasha A asked:

I have a puppy – 4 month French bulldog, He had nose drop form of Bordetella vaccination on 11/08/2008. Begining from day of vaccination he had a reverse sneezing almost every day and from 2 till 7 times a day. I think that it’s allergy reaction to the vaccination because my puppy have not had sneezing before. My vet said that I was wrong, that it was only characteristic feature of French Bulldogs. But I’m not agree with this…..
But it doesn’t matter now. What have to I do to reduce this reaction? I really wish to cure him!!!!!!! Or he will have a reverse sneezing always??? Your answers will be very appreciated for me and my puppy.

Also he still has a skin allergy, he’s itching, I’m still looking for the reason of this. By the vaccination day he was itching about 2 weeks and I asked vet to cancel his vaccination, he didn’t agree with me.
Thus, my puppy is itching a lot plus he has a reverse sneezing almost every day; he is taking Clemastine Fumarate (from itching – about 3.5 weeks) and Cefpodoxime Proxetil (from cacci which was found in his skin test 3 days ago). He is on the homemade diet (rice, turkey, cota cheese, vitamins, fish oil, carrot). He’s eating, drinking and walking well. But reverse snezing… so long time… I worry about him!!!

Ok, thank you very much for your answers. But I still haven’t the answer for my main question – “what have to I do with reverse sneezing”??? For instance, today my puppy had it about 5-7 times only for morning. I don’t think that it’s normal for French Bulldogs. My own opinion – something wrong with him, maybe it’s allergy immune response, but maybe there are bad bacteria??? So what have to I do with this? Maybe we need to do any tests?

If you do not think the vet is right, then seek another vet.

My breed is prone to vaccine reactions.. if a vet acts unconcerned about the possability of reactions, then I seek another vet.

I’ve never heard of reverse sneezing as being a reaction.. typical reaction symptoms are facial swelling, hives, swelling at the injection site, seizures, difficulty breathing, etc. However you are dealing with the intranasal and not an injectable.

Dogs with short noses do typically have issues with reverse sneezing, however because your dog was not doing it until after the vaccination, then I’d say you have a reason to be concerned.

Seek a second opinion.. you may want to try searching for a holistic vet..

Don’t mess around with Kennel cough. This can be given in shot form too and not just the nasal spray. Next time get your dog the shot. Don’t let people mislead you about Kennel Cough. It is not a harmless illness. My dog almost died last year from this. It progressed from Kennel Cough to pneumonia and my dog was in the animal ICU for 5 days and nights. Her lungs are now scarred and her activity level is much lower than it was previous. She is only 4 years old but I will take her as she is rather than not at all. It was horrible to not know if she would make it through it or not. If your dog is kenneled or in dog parks get this vaccination every six months, yearly will not cover it.
See another vet for a second opinion if you do not believe your vet, it isn’t a bad idea but never fail to vaccinate your dog for any of the recommended vaccines.

Some breeds, such as French bulldogs and other short-snouted breeds, often do what is called “reverse sneezing” and most normally snouted dogs don’t seem to do it much at all. It generally is not harmful. You need to talk to your vet about it some more to clear this up for you. I have never heard of any dog anywhere getting an allergic reaction to a bordetella nasal vaccine. Your dog will most likely reverse sneeze all of his life.

Allergies are caused in dogs by the same things that cause allergies in people. Your vet has your dog on a special diet to determine if your dog has a food allergy.

I think your vet is completely right and that you should follow her or his instructions.

Im stumped by this question.
So hes a 4 month old pup. He may have had a reaction to his nose drop, Im thinking of a short little fragile puppy snout and damage to his sinus cavity. And your vet may not realize it or not want to fess up.

Just my thought, (hardly taken seriously)

With all the itching could it be something in his envirenment? maybe bedding or something outside he licks or drinks from?

My other outside the box sugguestion is try another vet. The term getting a second opinion was made because it works.

Lots of books on specific breeds at Amazon on site below

Itchy skin or allergies is not significant enough to delay getting immunized. Your vet is right about that but he’s not educating you or giving you what’s really going on. I wouldn’t say the reverse sneezing is a reaction to the bordetella vaccine because there’s a coincidence factor. Your dog already has allergies which is an immune system ’symptom’. Reverse sneezing is another immune system ’symptom’. Taking your dog to the vet is stress and stress lowers immune system. Coincidently, just by GOING to the vet could have brought on the reverse sneezing.
Secondly, why are you cooking? I’m not against home made meals, just that dogs have no nutritional need for grains or milk products and very little vegetables. And they don’t need their meat cooked. If turkey is cooked, there’s a chemicle in it that is toxic to dogs … that same chemicle makes humans tired after eating it.
To correct the immune system the T1 & T2s need to be balanced again in the gut. There’s a way to do it but it takes 45 days of a product that cannot be taken with any other medicine.
