What “pick” of the litter does the sire get?

17
@my asked:

We recently bred our French bulldog with another French bulldog. As we preferred not to pay a “stud fee” we opted to give one of the puppies to the sire. Does anyone know what the etiquette on this is? Do they get first pick? Last pick? If they specify a preference for M/F or color does that give them priority over our pick (one of the puppies is going to stay in our family)? We are both wanting females so I’m worried if only one female is born how this will work out… Any help you can offer (by those “in the know”) would be greatly appreciated! I’ve searched online but can’t seem to come up with an answer.

You should have sorted this out clearly and in writing BEFORE breeding your dogs- be aware frenchies USUALLY need csections- get your wallet out!

As for ettiquette, usually, they get first pick BUT talk to them- if you want to keep one and have something in mind specifically, they may let you pick it out before the pick. By ‘rights’, though, they get first picks. Call them now and ask what they have in mind. If they only want a pup to sell themselves, it’s no big deal, but if they want the same specific pup type you do- by ‘rights’, they get it first.

Stud contracts should ALWAYS be in writing and signed by both parties with a copy for both parties- makes everything simpler.

They get first picks no matter what unless they are kind enough to let you go first, but they’re under NO obligation to. You gave them this privilege in leiu of the stud fee.

They get first pick, regardless of what you want. That is why it is called “pick of the litter.”

This is really something that you should have thought about BEFORE you even bred the dogs.

They get the first pick from the litter, meaning before you. It should be stated in the contract that you signed with them.

You should have had this all in writting before hand to avoid conflict but in any case, these kinds of agreements are usually done on an individual basis.
Generally the way it goes is the stud owner gets second pick. So you pick the best of the litter or the one you want and they get to choose from what is left. The stud owner never gets first pick usually unless the bit ch owner agrees to let them. It doesn’t matter what color or sex they prefer. Second pick of the litter from whatever you do not pick out first is what they get to choose from. If you pick the color and sex they were wanting as your first pick to keep or whatever, then it;s just the way the ball bounces and they still get 2nd choice from the litter. This could upset them if you choose teh only color or sex that they wanted so you should ALWAYS have these things very crystal clear before the litter is born and before the handshake.

I don’t know why all these people are stating that the stud owner gets first pick.. That has NEVER been the way it works among reputable breeders. Why would a person put their bitc.hes life on the line with having a litter, raise the litter, pay for all the medical bills, puppy checks, wormers, vacs, find th ehomes, etc and give up the FIRST pick??? That doesn’t make a drop of sense and is NOT how it works unless agreed upon and should NEVER be agreed upon in my opinion. The Bitch owner ALWAYS gets first pick. I advise you not to give the stud owner first pick unless you don’t care but YOU are the one who had to do all the work, risk your girls life, raise the litter, pay for everything and I would be damned if I would give up the best of the best. That is ridiculous! Maybe that is the practice among back yard breeder who don’t give a crap about anything, but responsible breeders don’t give their best puppy up for anything!

I realize you don’t likely show your dogs but seriously, reputable breeders are breeding to better what they started with. They breed to keep the best puppy to carry on generations with. You people can not be serious that a bit ch owner should have to give up the pick of the litter???
I co-own one of my girls with another breeder and we just did a breeding where the stud owner might want a puppy, so the agreement is that I get first pick, the co-owner gets 2nd pick and the stud owner gets 3rd pick or the stud fee should there not be a puppy she wants. THAT is standard among reputable breeders. I don’t care what any of these back yard breeders are saying. I suppose if you did not give a shitt and your only goal was to get a free stud service then you would allow the stud owner to come in and take the best puppy. But it’s not supposed to boil down to a friggin dollar. It’s ethics!

Well I guess from reading all these responses that Back Yard Breeders and Puppy Millers give their best puppy away for a 15 minute service they were to dam cheap to pay for in the first place. AMAZING and laughable how backward the back yard breeders think. Sheeesh! Anyone who is giving their best puppy away from the litter and feels it should always be that way is NOT breeding dogs to better the breed. They don’t care, they just want the money from the rest of the litter. Sickening really!

When you discuss this with her you better make sure that you have figured out what you will do if there is only ONE puppy born or that survives. What if you have to have a c-section (COMMON in your breed). That will cost you a couple grand, then say there is only one pup. Is she getting it? You are out thousands of dollars and possibly lose your bitch and there is one puppy… What now? This was a bad idea and not worth saving money over. Pay a stud fee the next time or better yet, spay her!
There sure are a LOT of back yard breeders on here risking their bitc hes life and giving up the best puppy in the litter! LOL LOSERS!!

Hello, I have been a part of the dog breeding process on both ends (owned the female, owned the stud, etc) so I should be able to answer this one.

The owner of the stud dog DOES get priority over your pick. They have the first choice of any puppy, no matter what color, gender, etc. You may mention that you prefer one puppy, and if the owner of the stud is gracious about it and is fine with you keeping it, then you should be in good shape. But at the end of the day, if they want the puppy you prefer, it is their’s :( .

Good luck, and I hope that helped!

if its your male dog that bred with there female dog then you get first pick of the litter, put your order in now for a female then you get to pick which one you want first,
they get to sell the rest of the puppies and if they want a female that badly they can use the money they make to buy one or you can always mate your dog with theres again and they can have the next female
although it not a written rule thats how it works.its the only fair way you get pick of litter they get the money from selling the pups.

The average fee for stud service is $500 or pick of the litter which means no matter what sex or color, you have to let them have the first pick.

They get first pick. You get leftovers.

Stop being a backyard breeder and get your poor dog spayed for crying out loud. Breeding should only be done for the betterment of the breed. Your using your dog as a cash crop. You need to make money? Get a JOB!

@my asked: What “pick” of the litter does the sire get?

Tony comments: Whichever you negotiated at the time of the stud service; check your contract.

When we had our Std. Poodle (then #2 producing stud dog in the nation) we were getting:

First and third puppy back, plus expenses; or
Second pick plus the stud fee (which was equal to the price of a show puppy).

The b*tch’s owner got to select which method of payment AT THE TIME OF THE STUD SERVICE … then it was made part of the breeding contract.

Pick puppy, btw, means just that; its gender doesn’t matter. If you wanted it to ‘matter,’ then you should have made it a matter of contractual agreement BEFORE you did the breeding.

since theres obviously no paperwork as should be before any breeding takes place and you offered the stud owner “pick of the litter” that means they get first pick of the litter, doesnt, matter what you want.

you should have written up a contract stating the stud owner gets second pick, meaning you as the owenr of the bitch get first pick…but since you didnt…THEY have every right to take whichever puppy they like, despite your personal wants.

sorry, but if you had honestly been ready to get into breeding, this would have been something youd thought about before even getting a stud dog…

hope you have that c-section prebooked…frenchies DONT deliver well naturally and shoudl ALWAYS be c-sectioned.

Pick of the litter means that the owner of the sire gets first choice of whatever puppy he wants. Talk to the owner about your concerns regarding a female, as some will be understanding and make another choice if you have your heart set on one.

They get the first pick. If there is only one female and they want it they get it. Pick of the litter is exactly that. First choice.

Next time…if there is one..pay the stud fee and get a stud contract in writing UP FRONT!!!!! When there is no meeting of the minds, trouble will follow. In this case, you are out of luck as a stud puppy is FIRST pick. In most cases, it is stated up front how many puppies are considered a litter. In most cases, this is two or more. Since you have not spelled this out, you may be really up the creek if there is one puppy born…not uncommon in Frenchies.
You may want to sit down with the owner of the sire and see if you can make a contract now. It is kind of too late, but you may avaoid some hard feelings to come.
Next time, be better prepared and get things done right!!!!
